I was in my student stash of alcohol the other day, when I came across a vodka bottle but not just any, but my favourite vodka to date “Absolut vodka Tropical”, which when I seen it as limited addition at Gatwick airport I just had to buy. I wasn’t the legal age to buy it at the time but my dad was with me and nothing was said. Now looking back and being 20 and now studying graphic design, I have came to love the Brand and there amazing art work on bottles. I personally think its one of the best bottle packaging out there to date… Swedish always getting it right.
So im going to look at some of the amazing bottles and the art works.
Original absolut vodka.
First I’m going to say, look at the bottle, it in my eyes is a perfect piece of manufacturing, it is slender but bulky, feminine but at the same time manly.
The Absolut Vodka seal of approval is pointing up perfect for shelf stacking.
The label is transparent, keeping the brand look sleek and cool.
The type fits in brilliantly with the brand and what they are trying to portray.
I just feel it is a brilliant design.
Now having the original as a nice clean and sleek bottle clearly paves the way for colour and art, it is just like painting onto a blank canvas, allowing the brand to do what they like in order to sell there vodkas to the target audience.
The bottle design hasn’t changed since the rebrand of the company in 1979, not long really for a bottle to not change but it has become well known for its bottle so why bother changing it.
Next… my favourite the limited addition “Absolut Vodka Tropical”.
The Tropical, I have to say it is not the best of the vodka bottles that Absolut Vodka have produced when it comes to there looks but is still my personal favourite.
Its called “Travellers Exclusive” which would lead me to believe that it may have only have been available to those jetting of to other country’s, maybe only available at airports, which is a good way of getting the brand name out there and really make people think about what vodka they will buy next time. The fact that the bottle is so eye catch (as I know to well) is a brilliant thing to have at airports because people will want to know what this amazing colourful bottle is.
Anyway on to the design. When you first look at the bottle the colours are mainly warm and hot, with the red, orange and yellow, perfect because when people think tropical they think hot and the green keeping in with the forest and the fruit that go into making the vodka.
Im not fully sure what the pattern is on the front, I thought at first a map but the more and more you glare at it the harder it is to make out. On the other hand it could be the amount of the different types of fruit that are in it, as there is a key bellow giving the fruits name. Im not fully sure but still looks good.
The Brand name is down at the bottom right, good poisoning as it is on a clear part not taking away with the eye catching design, but it is also along what i would guess to be a dotted equator line… brilliant really.
Now looking at the more simple designs of the brand and there bottle designs.
So here we have a range of designs all quite simple but they all knit together and link with the original very well as you can see with the original being in the photo.
It personally is engines and so simple. When it comes to the selling of a bran new flavour all they need to do is change the logo to the colour we associate with the flavour, well nearly always and they will need to change the info to but that doesn’t count for much.
Although with the likes of the Raspberri, Vanilia and Mandrin they all have a bit more of a chance.
Raspberri – is a seductive red bottle, a bit like the fruit itself. You can nearly guess what flavour it is even before you see the name.
Vanilia – a rough glass bottle, you can’t gaze into the bottle to see what is held inside but that is a good thing. The type is white and light grey making you have to go right up to it in order to even make out, adding to its elusiveness. I think it was a smart way to use the bottle as it is how I can imagine what vanilla looks like if i had never seen a vanilla pod.
Mandrin – I am not fully sure how this is done but the makers have made it so that it looks like the is half an orange sitting at the bottom of the bottle. It again is a rough bottle giving the bottle that bit of exeter feel around it.
Now the 2012 “Absolut Vodka London” limited addition for the Queens Diamond Jubilee.
One of the best illustrations on a bottle in years.
This bottle is an amazing bottle, It is just original vodka but it has its “london” name, it is a brilliant marketing idea, it taps into the London and UK market because it involves them its part of who they are, it has there name on it. I can’t lie i even bought it but i bought it for the illustration, which is so good, its very simple only two colours and two shade involved keeping the manufacturing costs down.
It was a really well thought out bottle as it has all the land marks of london in the illustration and all different styles of people as most in the UK know you get all sorts in london making it so unique in itself.
Absolut Vodka in Bling Gold.
Just look at it!
It looks amazing, such a good way of getting the rich to try Absolut.
Its such a beautiful bottle, playing on peoples fascination with gold is such a good way to get them big buyers in.
It was part of the Bling Bling campaign which seen a number of vodka bottles come out including a disco ball style bottle.
They really know how to do marketing.
Ok finally the new Absolut Vodka Unique.
As you may guess from the title on the image… there are millions to chose from all being different in every single way.
I love this campaign as it is trying to make everyone feel special, like how cool is it to have your very own vodka bottle that no one in the world has the same as?? pretty incredible if you ask me.
They use paint and just spatter it on there. Just WOW. Its incredible PR and marketing.
They have the logo in a white box which makes it easy to read so people don’t get lost on what the product is but also to show that they have went that bit further yet again.
Now after looking at the Brand more and there design of bottles, I have to say the brand means more to me as a creative person but also just in general they really know how to make the costumer fell about the products, they use colour and illustrations to manipulate us into buying the product. Such good marketing.
Thanks for the read if you do 😀
